An 18 km sandy beach, the former capital of Lycia and a loggerhead turtle nesting ground — Patara is the most impressive day-trip from Kaş.
Located about 45 minutes from Kaş, Patara simultaneously hosts Turkey's longest beach (18 km) and the former capital of Lycia. Once one of the busiest harbour cities of the ancient Mediterranean, Patara captivates visitors today with its remarkably preserved ruins and unspoilt nature.
**Ancient Ruins**
Stepping through the city gate, the colonnaded street immediately reveals the grandeur of the Roman era. The Bouleuterion (assembly hall), Roman baths, granary and harbour jetty ruins speak to the city's strategic importance. The ancient theatre, partly buried in sand, still retains its magnificence.
**Patara Beach**
Behind the sand dunes lies Patara Beach, stretching 18 kilometres to claim the title of Turkey's longest sandy beach. From May to October, part of the beach is subject to evening access restrictions as it is a loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta) nesting site. The wave and wind conditions also make it popular with surfers.
