Saint Nicholas, the true historical source of the Santa Claus legend, served as bishop in this small Anatolian church. Discover the real history in Demre.

Located in Demre, about 35 km from Kaş, the Church of Saint Nicholas holds deep meaning for millions worldwide who are curious about the true historical origins of 'Santa Claus.' Saint Nicholas, born in Myra around AD 270, was renowned throughout his life for helping the poor and is particularly venerated as the patron saint of children.

**History of the Church**
Following Saint Nicholas's death in AD 343, a small church was built over his tomb. Damaged over time by earthquakes and floods, the building was reconstructed during the reigns of Byzantine Emperor Constantine II and later Nikephoros I. The largely intact church today preserves 9th-century Byzantine mosaics and frescoes.
